Coughlin & Gerhart, LLP was founded October 1, 1973 by the merger of two existing Binghamton law firms. Its predecessor firms date back to the 1890s. It represents one of the oldest multi-service law firms in the Southern Tier of New York. The Binghamton Labor and Employment Law Firm of Twining, Nemia & Steflik merged into Coughlin & Gerhart, L.L.P. in January of 1999. The attorneys of Pearis, Kline & Barber of Binghamton became "Of Counsel" to the firm on January 1, 2007. The Ithaca law office of Jonathan O. Albanese joined Coughlin & Gerhart, L.L.P. on May 1, 2009. The firm's general civil practice is conducted throughout the State and Federal Courts at both the trial and appellate levels. Its lawyers are active in the Broome County, New York State and American Bar Associations, and its past and present partners include bar association officers and community leaders. The lawyers of the firm participate in a wide variety of community services, pro bono work, and take part in civic and charitable activities. I was in a car accident that required surgery and several years of physical therapy. I was pretty apprehensive about getting a lawyer involved since I'd never had need of one prior to this. I waited a couple of years before reaching out to Coughlin & Gerhart at a coworker's recommendation. And I honestly wish I did it sooner. Bob Jones got in contact with me soon after and helped me through everything. He listened to everything I had to say involving the accident, all the treatments I had gone through, what I was still going through, and how the injury has affected my life. He is extremely knowledgeable, explained everything in easy to understand ways, and gave me clear choices in how to approach the case. He took everything I said into account, developed a plan based on that, and got me a fair settlement. I highly recommend both Bob Jones, his team, and Coughlin & Gerhart.

We engaged Coughlin&Gerhart to guide us through the New York State Guardianship process for our unfortunately rapidly deteriorating father. It turns out that our selection of said firm was very wise as they deftly navigated us through the turbid and choppy legal seas. The two lawyers we heavily interacted with were very knowledgeable, astute, respectful, caring, classy, ethical, communicative and transparent. We've all heard countless lawyer jokes and our initial expectations for the process were indeed tainted by the general societal atmosphere created by such professional jabs. We were very pleased to quickly recognize that such a zeitgeist did not apply in this situation. These folks are the antithesis of Saul Goodman from Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad and "law-talking guy" Lionel Hutz from The Simpsons. We could not be more pleased with the efforts and professionalism of the C&G lawyers and staff and the legal outcome that they were able to achieve. We heartily recommend said firm.

Hired Attorney Robert R. Jones

I can never thank Bob enough for the professional and personal care he showed me throughout my ordeal. I was the victim of a car accident. I suffered a great amount of pain (three trips to the ER). It was a terrible time in my life, and the other driver’s insurance company wouldn’t do anything for me. Bob took my case, and worked hard for me! He kept me informed, and sincerely cared about my ongoing medical issues. I highly recommend Bob Jones to anyone!

My family found ourselves in need of a lawyer for a lawsuit filed against my parent's trust. Bob Jones was recommended by another lawyer in the firm to litigate our case. Although it was outside of his usual areas of litigation, he took on our case. He did a splendid job of representing us and advised the family through to the final settlement.
