How do I get a divorce when my husband's in the military?

Since you've only been married a year and maybe lived together for four years, it is unlikely you would get any alimony after the divorce is final. You may get something between the date of filing and the date of the final decree. Not being able to drive is not a reason the court can recognize as you could either learn to drive or take public transit. The court could order your husband to pay support for the children if their fathers are not paying support, but would likely to require you to seek support from their father.

What should he do to protect his rights prior to filing?

The son needs counsel, and you would be best to stay out of this mess. It is a no win for you and the man you are dating. The most you might do is help him financially. Realistically never expect to see the money again.
