Ken Byers and Associates charge very aggressively, and once they bill you you rarely hear from them. They provide you with a minimum quote at the time of sign up, the final bill will be much more than you estimated. Expect to pay at least $10,000-$15,000 for a basic criminal defense case. All they do at the crown pre-trial is negotiate a plea deal, which even a first year paralegal could help you with. You are essentially paying them to negotiate a plea deal, since the current Canadian justice essentially is a racket where you pay lawyer $10K plus to negotiate a plea deal for you. I would highly recommend you shop around for a lawyer because other lawyers can do the same thing this firm can do and probably at a much cheaper price.
TOTAL TRASH. If the home of incompetence and indifference is what you're looking for, you've come to the right place! Will take your money, pawn you off to second rate lawyers, and do nothing for you. Worthy of zero stars.
I met with Ken Byers through FaceTime, explained the charges of assault, mischief and fleeing the scene, was given a monthly payment plan. They attend Court dates but never advised me on how it went. They never returned my calls, never sent me an invoice. I would have liked an invoice detailing the work done for me. Ken would send his son, Chris to attend court proceedings but Chris was not informative. I would have to ask the questions but It was like pulling teeth to get an answer. After Ken or Chris met with the Crown and a Judge, I was advised that it was going to trial. At at moment I informed them that I couldn’t afford a trial and advised them I was going to self-represent and Ken advised the Crown to which the Crown told him He would think about it. After months I called his office. I advised Ken that I wanted to plead guilty to get it over and done with. Ken never advised me of the consequences and sent a colleague who had been suspended by Law Society to Court with me.
I had a very disappointing experience with Ken Byers of Daley Byers firm, who handled my case. From the start, it became clear that his focus was not on my legal needs, well-being, or the pursuit of justice—but on my wallet. I felt less like a valued client and more like just another invoice, being misled and left in a worse position as the case dragged on with little to no meaningful progress. Communication was poor, inconsistent and lack of transparency. His assistant scheduled Zoom/phone meetings to go over incomplete disclosure documents, but Ken repeatedly failed to show up—with no explanation or apology. I had to constantly follow up for updates, and when I did receive a response, it was vague, unhelpful, or dismissive. I do not recommend Ken Byers to anyone. If you're looking for a lawyer who genuinely cares about your case—not just your money—I strongly suggest looking elsewhere.
