Alex is a partner at Farris practising labour and employment law.
Alex advises employers in all areas of law that relate to the employment relationship, in both union and non-union settings. He works with clients proactively and strategically to address often sensitive workplace issues in a timely way, with a focus on organizational objectives.
Alex has an active litigation practice which covers the increasing range of potential legal claims that employers now face. He acts for employers in a number of industries and sectors before administrative tribunals such as the BC Labour Relations Board, the Canada Industrial Relations Board, the BC Human Rights Tribunal, the Employment Standards Tribunal, the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal, the Office of the Information & Privacy Commissioner, and Collective Agreement Grievance Arbitrations. He also regularly defends employers in wrongful dismissal lawsuits.
Alex devotes a significant part of his practice to advising employers and executives on executive compensation and employment matters. He regularly drafts and advises on employment agreements, incentive and bonus plans, retention agreements, severance agreements, independent contractor agreements and workplace policies. He works with employers when they are confronted with departing key employees and advises on fiduciary duties and non-competition, non-solicitation, and confidentiality obligations. He also advises clients on sickness, disability and accommodation matters.
Alex frequently works with Farris teams on complex corporate transactions providing advice on a variety of labour and employment issues.
Alex regularly acts as a speaker and contributor at seminars and conferences on topical human resources legal issues. He is also a member of the firm’s Private Enterprise Advisory Services team, a multi-disciplinary team providing legal services to mid-market privately owned businesses.
