He furthered his education at Tulane University, where he achieved his Bachelor of Arts in history with honors in 1988. During his time at Tulane, Wells was enrolled in the university's joint BA/JD degree program, culminating in the awarding of his Juris Doctorate with honors from Tulane University in 1990.

He gained admission to the Louisiana Bar in 1990 and the Mississippi Bar in 1992, subsequently earning entry into all the United States District Courts in both states, along with the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. His expanding legal reach led to admissions to the bars of New York, Georgia, and the US Court of International Trade.
A pinnacle achievement in Wells's career came on May 1, 2017, when he was admitted to practice and argue cases before the Supreme Court of the United States, an honor reserved for a select few in the legal profession.
