Bar Fellowship
of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a CEDR Accredited Mediator.
Jane qualified as a lawyer in the United States in 1991 and was involved in a general commercial litigation practice in Chicago for three years before moving back to her native England in 1994. She was admitted to practice as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1995.
Jane has concentrated on developing an international commercial arbitration practice, and she has appeared as counsel in arbitrations under the rules of most of the major international arbitration institutions in countries throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. She has experience in a wide variety of legal issues, including contract interpretation, joint venture arrangements, antitrust issues, license agreements, intellectual property, and complex damages analyses. Jane has been involved in disputes under the substantive laws of various U.S. states and countries including Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Japan, India, and South Africa.
Over the last few years, Jane has developed particular experience in the hospitality industry both in formal disputes and counselling clients in strategies to avoid and mitigate the risks of disputes. In 2011, Jane founded the firm's Hospitality Industry practice, pulling together the firm's expertise in the hospitality industry across all practice areas.
Cross-border litigation issues are also of particular interest to Jane. She has many years' experience dealing with gathering evidence from witnesses outside the U.S. for use in U.S. litigation. She also frequently advises clients on issues that arise in the selection of dispute resolution clauses, including choice of law and forum selection.
With the growth of interest in Europe of competition recovery actions, Jane has developed a practice seeking damages on behalf of companies harmed by the behavior of cartels in Europe. She brought one of the first cases of this kind in the Competition Appeal Tribunal, representing corporate entities that were harmed by anticompetitive conduct. Jane is also involved in pursuing such cases in the English court.
Jane frequently speaks at conferences on issues relating to dispute resolution in international commercial agreements and contributes to legal journals on issues arising in her practice.
