Melissa Ruby joined Simms Showers as an Associate Attorney in September 2023. Ms. Ruby regularly practices in the areas of Church and Nonprofit Law, Appellate Litigation, Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining, and Employment Law. Ms. Ruby brings to Simms Showers a broad array of experience, both legal and non-legal, which she draws upon to serve her clients.
Before becoming a lawyer, Ms. Ruby taught at a non-profit, private Christian school, which provided her with a unique insight into the specific challenges facing such institutions. Her experiences there propelled her interest in a legal career where she could assist non-profits in navigating the complexities of the law while fulfilling their missions.
During law school, Ms. Ruby gained experience in civil litigation while serving as a law clerk for the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, Professional Boards Prosecution Section. She also worked for Sentara Health Systems, Office of General Counsel, where she gained experience in business organizations, regulation compliance, and contracts.
After graduating law school, Ms. Ruby served for two years as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Randolph A. Beales of the Court of Appeals of Virginia in Richmond.
