Estate Planning lawyer at Musilli Brennan Associates, PLLC
You should discuss the details with an attorney, but generally no. A trustee does not only assets but is only in administering them in a fiduciary capacity. Therefore his tax problems would affect any here he might personally be entitled to, but not affect other beneficiaries. If this pertains to Michigan you are welcome to call Musilli Brennan Associates PLLC with details and to engage the firm.

Don't give said child a key. Be sure your executor and your lawyer know of your concern about said child.

How is your new husband's estate plan set up. You have certain elections, spousal rights including a homestead allowance, an exempt property allowance and an spousal allowance under Michigan Probate law if the house were solely in his name and subject to the probate court's jurisdiction. You may have a dower interest in the property. Your husband's estate plan could provide a life estate for you.
