No will is "iron clad." However, perhaps he created an irrevocable trust instead of a will. You can challenge a will in probate court.

Are all beneficiaries of bank accounts payable on death, or must it be explicitly stated?

With respect to bank accounts, I've never seen contingent beneficiaries, although I suppose this is possible. The term is "payable on death" or, for securities, "transfer on death." It would be unnecessary to create a beneficiary for any condition other than the death of the account owner, since the account owner can always withdraw money and make gifts, if that's the intent.

There is no way to provide a legal opinion without seeing the documents in question. However, it is possible that you have a contract which was breached. There are remedies available for breach of a real estate contract, including specific performance.. in other words.. forcing the sale to you. My recommendation is that you talk to an attorney as soon as possible to get the best result.
