Absolutely, your will has no effect and is not binding until you die. The primary exception to this would be if you and a deceased spouse had contractual wills in which you agreed to leave specific property to the child and you received some property from the deceased spouse. In some states, selling the property might be a breach of the agreement.

Power of attorney is granted by the principal, and dies when the principal dies. You need to petition the court to be named administrator of your father's estate.
