Talk to your attorney. This should be an ongoing conversation. If you are not clear on your responsibilities, which can vary from case to case, then you should ask your attorney for more information. The Judge will not send you anything about your duties. Discuss with your attorney how your compensation should be computed. Generally speaking, I advise my administrator clients to keep a log of their time and what they did for the estate.

Some people's situations and desires are such that a Will is sufficient and a trust is unnecessary; with others a trust is a an option (but is still not necessary); for others a trust is a must in order to accomplish their objectives. If you live near my area feel free to contact me and set up an appointment to discuss this further. I do estate planning for fixed fees so you'll know what it will cost to accomplish your objectives.

If you are not a blood relative of this person, and his family is now coming to assert ownership of his property and belongings, you cannot legally change the locks of his home. Even without a will, a person's belongings pass by a law known as intestate succession, so the relatives coming out of the woodwork have a legal claim to the residence as well as any other items of value he left behind. They can assert this claim by filing a small estate affidavit in the county where your friend died.
