What do I do after I was served with a notice to appear in court for stopping the payment of alimony?

Whether or not you need an attorney is a personal decision and I cannot tell you that you should, although if you are facing a contempt action for failure to pay spousal support, you may well wish to have an attorney, as you could be sent to jail for failure to comply with a court order.

Can I file for divorce on behalf of my mother with a power of attorney?

She either needs to come here or to hire a lawyer. Most lawyers charge actual costs and hourly fees from about $300 per hour to over $600 per hour. It depends where they practice and how much the local market is.

What are my options of I've missed the 30 day response period for responsing to divorce?

Stephen Marc Drucker

Has your spouse entered a 'default'?  If he has not, then you should file a response immediately.  If he has filed a 'default' then you will need a 'motion to set aside the default'. It is always a good idea to file a response in a timely manner so that you avoid the cost of doing a motion and then a response.  It is a great to try to negotiate an agreement as this will limit your costs, but you want to be sure that you get legal advice so that you know what is reasonable in your case.  You can still agree on issues, by way of a stipulation, even if you have filed a response.
