My husband and his attorney are refusing to participate in a settlement conference, is trial the only option left?

Generally, a party in a divorce case is strongly encouraged by the Judge to engage in good faith settlement negotiations. The Judges have ways to motivate people to participate in settlement conferences but they cannot actually force someone to negotiate in good faith. I think your instincts are good about him being unreasonable and it could very well be that your husband has decided to refuse to negotiate with you because he thinks that he can steamroll you when the case goes to trial since you do not have an attorney.

You can retain a lawyer anywhere in NJ presently since most lawyers are meeting with their clients through Zoom teleconference technology and most courts are still proceeding through zoom for court proceedings as well. But, if you are more comfortable working with a local lawyer, then look for divorce lawyers in your county. If there are any complications to your matter, then your google search should be for "Certified Matrimonial Trial Lawyers by the New Jersey Supreme Court", since only 2% of all lawyers in the state of NJ have met the qualifications for 'certificaiton" by the court system.

I make 70000 a year an pay 12200 a year in child support can my X still get 20000 a year in alimony

Answered by attorney Diana L. Anderson
Divorce lawyer at Diana L. Anderson
If you disagree with the child support and alimony that has to be paid, you can make application to the court indicating that your circumstances have changed, and seek to get it reduced.  the child support is going ot be based on the number nights the child stays with you versus your ex and how much each of you makes.
