First, you would need to make sure that you have filed a response so you will not be in default. Then for you to proceed you would have to file a request for trial setting conference to get the case moving through the Court system. That will either foster a settlement or you can proceed to trial.

Generally an appeal does not itelf stay the effect of an order or judgment. To accomplish that, you need to file a motion with the trial court. If that court does not grant the stay, you can go to the appeals court for a stay. Appeals are hard to win. A lawyer can improve your chances.
