My husband left the country to Haity to get a divorce from me, without me knowing is this legal. I live in NJ and got married in NJ

you need to retain the services of a matrimonial attorney.  Even though he is in Haiti, the assets you referenced are here in New Jersey and can be "seized" and the liens challenged by you until the divorce is finalized.  You can be granted access to asset while the divorce is pending. This is not a question that can be fully answered in an online forum.  Instead you should seek a matrimonial attorney who practices in the county in which you live. Good Luck .

Does my lawyer need to be in the same county as I reside in?

Answered by attorney Diana L. Anderson
Divorce lawyer at Diana L. Anderson
Yes - you can use that firm.  There is no reason an attorney from another county can't represent you.  Sometimes, attorneys are more familiar with one county because they appear in that county most often and get to know the judges and other lawyers.  However, many attorneys practice in more than on e county.

No pre-nup, is my wife forced to give half her money to me?

Answered by attorney Diana L. Anderson
Divorce lawyer at Diana L. Anderson
New Jersey requires equitable distribution of assets.  That does not necessarily mean that your wife will have to give you one half of everything that she had prior to the marriage.  It means you are entitled to an equitable portion of what was earned or acquired during the marriage.
