First, find a place to stay. If there is no reasonable probability of violence, you can always go back to the marital homeplace. Second, call a lawyer as there are various other things that may be good ideas or bad ideas depending on your circumstances.

If I was married in one state but live in another, how can I file for divorce?

Robert S. Poydasheff

Jurisdiction to file a divorce typically depends on how long you lived in the state and not where you were married. In Georgia you must have lived in the county for six months before you can file for a divorce.

Should we get lawyers?

Christine Marie Santana Bechtold
Answered by attorney Christine Marie Santana Bechtold (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at The Law Office of Christine M. Bechtold, LLC
It is always a good idea to have an attorney work with you on legal documents. Some attorneys will offer document production or document review services. Be sure to get a description of your legal services and the fee in writing at the start. I highly recommend that you at least have someone review your documents given that there are minor children and child support is involved. You need to ensure the documents are properly completed for the best interests of the minor children. Christine@Bechtold-Law.com
