in Civil Liberties. While in law school he was one of the founders of the Public Interest Law Foundation, Inc. He also attended Durham College at the University of Durham in England under the auspices of the Institute for European Studies.
Mr. Copeland is admitted to practice in New York; the U.S. Supreme Court; the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, Fourth, and Ninth Circuits; and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
Experience
· Represented national parking facility operator in class and collective action for overtime and discrimination on basis of national origin. Achieved narrowing of class to one shift at one garage on overtime issues and dropping of the discrimination class.
· Represented a national parking facility operator in case brought by two individuals alleging overtime and discrimination claims on the basis of national origin and sex and sexual harassment
· Represented a major medical center in libel and breach of contract action. Motion to dismiss claim of compelled self-defamation granted
· Represented an individual defendant in case alleging sex discrimination, harassment and retaliation. Companion case to action brought by EEOC against employer
· Represented an individual defendant in second case against him and employer alleging sex discrimination, harassment and retaliation
· Represented a major hospital in ERISA litigation and contract case
· Successfully defended a lawsuit brought by former CEO seeking payments under employment contract and ERISA
· Represented a community based health center in successful defense of charges by former personnel director of discrimination against employees based on age and retaliation against him personally
· Represented a radio station in lawsuit brought over advertisement
· Represented a promotion and sign company in challenge to application of zoning resolution to accessory signs on First Amendment and other grounds
· Represented a boxing promoter in libel and contract litigation
· Represented a corporation in copyright litigation transferred to religious court
· Represented the Prime Minister of Greece in libel litigation in London. Case successfully settled prior to trial.
· Successful defense of Benjamin Spock in breach of contract action
· Defense of libel suit. Case dismissed and sanctions imposed against plaintiff.
· Represented church group in successful challenge on First Amendment grounds to charitable solicitation ordinance
· Challenge by group of journalists to ban on travel to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to report on refugees detained there
· Litigation over First Amendment rights of musicians to perform in the subway system
· Represented Greek Government interests in variety of matters involving public and private international law
· Represented a church in litigation over privileged documents with IRS establishing procedure and burdens in applying crime fraud exception to the attorney client privilege and court authority to order conditional enforcement of IRS summons
· Successfully represented a Community Preservation Corporation in litigation brought against it, former lawyer and state court judge over rulings and proceedings against opposing counsel in state court litigation
· Successful challenge on behalf of academics and writers to denial of visa to Hortensia de Allende
· Action for damages by Freedom Rider against United States for failure to protect him from beating by Ku Klux Klan. Verdict for plaintiff after trial.
· Represented an individual in action to obtain documents from government including discovery over adequacy of search for documents
