How will I know if someone files a police report on me?

Go to the local police department and ask for any and all reports about you. You would not be notified if it is all hogwash, and what she had to say did not amount to a crime. Do not talk with police if they come to you without speaking to an attorney first.

What happens after a shoplifting charge?

Answered by attorney Harley Ives Gutin
Criminal Law lawyer at Gutin Wolverton
Assuming that the officer files the case report with the State you will receive a letter or document to appear in Court. If you fail to appear the Court will issue a bench warrant. If you are a first time offender then this is a minor charge that will hurt your resume more then you directly right now. If you have a defense you should fight this charge. If you dont have defense then you will probably resolve this case with a plea to a retail theft class and court costs.

What can I do when a female acquaintance lied and told the police I hit her during an argument?

I would be prepared for a charge to be filed and would ask people you trust for referrals for a good attorney and I would contact a few and make sure you retain someone you feel comfortable with; an attorney can at least communicate with the prosecutor's office about whether or not a charge will be filed and if so when.
