Any amount is possession. Yes, they should hire attorneys who can cut special deals to keep the conviction off their records.

That is possible; however, if your wife gave a written statement, they could use that in court. Also, if she now recants, they could potentially charge her with filing a false police report. You and your wife need to understand that when 911 is called, it puts into motion a series of events that are no longer in your or her control. The police hate responding to domestics as more police are hurt responding to these cases than any other. When they respond, if there is any evidence of a domestic, then someone is going to be arrested. The law requires it. Now, after all this, your wife has a "change of heart". She cannot use the legal system as a sword. In the future, if she calls 911, the police may not be so quick to respond. Think about it. She could also be charged with the costs of the police response.

What should I do in court if I'm 18 years old and I was recently caught shoplifting with my friend?

Diversion is generally a good option because it keeps the matter off your record. Consult with a local criminal defense attorney just to make sure you are making the right decision.
