Prior to working for Zachary D. Smith, LLC, Colin spent several years learning the practice of family law at an established boutique firm in downtown Cincinnati – first as a paralegal, and then as an attorney. Colin has had the opportunity to work on a variety of cases, including complex litigation, high net worth divorces, and appeals.
Career Background
Prior to earning a degree in legal studies, Colin worked in IT, helping individuals and small businesses diagnose and fix software, hardware, and networking issues. This experience of spending his time by himself, in a room with a computer, waiting for installations to finish or scans to complete was not fulfilling. The challenges of the work – solving problems – weren’t enough. Colin knew he needed to work with and for others. After taking some college classes in different disciplines, Colin realized that law was a natural fit. The practice of law rewards knowledge and preparation, regularly presents novel challenges, and, most importantly, gives Colin the opportunity to work with people.
Family Law
Unlike some other legal disciplines, family law attorneys must possess a wide variety of skills to be successful. Obtaining the best outcome for the client requires flexibility in approach and broad competence - it is never enough to be good at just one thing. This variety, and the challenge it provides, is part of what drew Colin to family law. What keeps Colin engaged in family law is the people, and the fact that he has the opportunity to make a difference during a difficult time in people's lives. Colin strives to offer calm assurance and to provide a sense of stability for clients, especially in stressful situations.
Personal Life
Colin enjoys watching movies, tinkering with computers and electronics, and reminiscing about the time before law school when he could read for pleasure.
