Jack Joseph Carriglio is a lawyer practicing commercial, eminent domain, white collar crime. Jack received a B.A. degree from University of Illinois, and has been licensed for 48 years. Jack practices at Cozen O'Connor in Chicago, IL.
Jack has tried cases and argued appeals in federal and state civil and criminal courts throughout the United States. Clients have included corporations from the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan.
Jack has represented a variety of clients in challenging and high-profile matters. His clients have been public corporations as well as mid-size and small companies, partnerships and individuals. His representations have included:
· Jack successfully defended the City of Prospect Heights, Illinois in a three week trial in Cook County Court on a $20 million breach of contract claim by a real estate developer as to a failed project to build a sports arena. The trial verdict completely rejected the developer's claim and barred it from any recovery against the City.
· Jack tried a case in federal court in Chicago which resulted in a verdict in favor of his client, an international commercial real estate owner and landlord, against the claims of a tenant, American Multi-Cinema, Inc. ("AMC"), regarding the allocation of millions of dollars of expenses relating to the tenant's use of the property. The trial court found in favor of Jack's client and ordered AMC to reimburse its landlord for the expenses.
· Jack represented the Chief of Police and the command staff of the City of Highland Park as to allegations of racial profiling. Jack participated in the City's internal investigation and successfully defended his clients in federal lawsuits related to the allegations.
· Jack represented the Board of Education of Township High School District 211 and the Director of Special Education for Township High School District 211 in a lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Obtained dismissal with prejudice of multiple count complaint arising out of various difficulties connected with a student's special education at District 211 and asserted under the American with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Civil Rights Act. Successfully defended appeal in the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
· Jack defended. a corporate manufacturer in the defense of patent, copyright and trademark federal cases. The defense has been successful and the cases against the client have been dismissed.
· Jack tried a federal jury case where he defended a sports agent against a multi-million dollar action brought by a former professional baseball player. Jack's client was found not-guilty as to all claims.
· Jack represented the former president of a Chicago Chinatown business organization in a federal criminal indictment alleging conspiracy and tax charges. The jury returned a verdict in favor of Jack's client dismissing all conspiracy/tax charges.
· Jack was the lead trial lawyer of a team which obtained a not-guilty jury verdict for a corporate defendant in a California case where the plaintiff sought millions of dollars of damages for alleged racial discrimination in employment.
· Jack tried a state chancery action where he represented the former partners of a national law firm with respect to their claims against their law firm regarding the division of its assets. A settlement was reached on the eve of the trial's conclusion which successfully resolved the case.
· Jack led a team of attorneys representing the United Retired Pilot Benefit Protection Association, a group of approximately 3,500 retired pilots, in pursuit of their bankruptcy claims against United Airlines. The representation included proceedings before the bankruptcy and district courts, the Seventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. The teams' work resulted in a substantial extension of pension and insurance benefits for the retired pilots.
· Jack represented a former executive of a public company, Mercury Finance Company, in connection with a federal criminal investigation regarding the accuracy of financial information provided to stockholders, financial institutions and the Securities & Exchange Commission. The matter has been concluded and no charges were brought against the client.
· Jack was a member of a trial team which defended an action in federal court alleging violations of copyright law against his client, an Australian citizen, Rhonda Byrne, the author and producer of the book and movie known as "The Secret". The case was tried to a jury who returned a verdict in favor of Ms. Byrne.
· Jack represented an electronics company, in the defense of a class-action where the plaintiffs complained of promotional and advertising practices. Jack successfully argued against class-certification and the case was dismissed.
· Jack was an expert for a corporate defendant in a case in Great Britain and testified as an expert witness in court in London on issues of the law of the United States which were relevant to the English court proceedings.
· Jack represented a manufacturer in a product liability case involving alleged defects in electronic motors used in the heating and ventilation systems of trucks. As part of the defense, Jack prosecuted the manufacturer's claims against a third-party defendant, a supplier of motor parts, who underwrote a settlement which resolved the case.
