If I do bankruptcy, does this wipe the slate clean, or will I still have massive bills to pay?

If you qualify for chapter 7 and file chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will discharge most unsecured debts such as credit cards. There are some debts that are not dischargeable through bankruptcy such as student loans, taxes and support payments, but you should consult with a bankruptcy attorney to review your over all circumstances to see if you qualify for ch. 7 and to see what debts can discharge and whether filing bankruptcy is the best solution for you.

Can debt collectors still try to garnish wages if I told them I filed for bankruptcy?

If the creditor is pursuing a garnishment after you actually file bankruptcy then you can sue them. If you are just preparing to file, the creditor can pursue any legal method to collect until such time as you actually file.

What appears on my credit report during a chapter 7 bankruptcy?

Charles J Schneider
Answered by attorney Charles J Schneider (Unclaimed Profile)

What is contained in a credit report is not dictated by your bankruptcy. A credit report is not a legal document. It is like a newspaper - just a written rumor of your financial situation that is supposed to follow industry standards.
