What would normal attorney fees be for handling a chapter 7 bankruptcy?

The legal fee for a personal (non-business) Chapter 7 can range widely depending on the services provided with $750 to $2,000 being common. Court fees and other costs will be separate charges. If you just want an attorney to supervise a clerk typing your papers and showing up in court, you will pay on the lower end of the price range. If your income is higher, more work will need to be performed, and you can expect to pay a higher fee. If you need legal advice about protecting your assets, answering your questions, also expect to pay more.

Be very careful. It is wise to talk to an experienced bankruptcy attorney before deciding to take this important step.

How much do you have to have to file chapter 7?

In debt. The law sets no minimum amount you must owe to qualify, but be real! To be eligible to eliminate your debts in Chapter 7, you must show that if you made a reasonable effort, you would be unable to pay at least 25% of your debts off over a 5 year period of time. So if you only owe $10K, you would need to prove that you couldn't even pay $2,500 off over 60 months, which works out to $41.67/month. For most of the people I represent with a low amount of debt, they can't meet this criteria and I suggest other options to resolve their debt problems.
